Sandros... With the sun shining in his face. Finding the right colors red.Finally, found the right red color contrast.
But, not satisfied with it.Starting here with a sketch of myself.The colors red/pink and green, I didn't thought they match too well with each other. Red was in my opinion too dominant. So I will blend some orange in there too.Much better.To much a comic style..."The long-term vision"

A new challenge...
Two portraits on one canvas, with perspective in the background.
Moreover, a personal portrait this time, making it a lot harder to look at it objectively.
The idea was to use the complementing colors red and green. As in every 'good' relationship, you remain an individual with your own color, often in stark contrast to the other, thereby amplifying each others strengths and making each other shine just the more. The moment you start mixing too much, start developing symbiotic tendencies, the relationship and you yourself become faint and lifeless. Just the same holds for complementing colors (orange/blue, red/green, yellow/purple), they are strongest next to each other, mixing them and you end up with a dull brownish...
Great idea, I thought! But soon I discovered that contrasting in red easily results in pinkish or a very dark bordeaux red. So far, I consider red a hellishly difficult color to contrast in.
In the end I diverted a bit from my original plan and opted for orange and bordeaux.
But next, how do you get a sun to really shine? How to transform it into a source of light? Again this took a number painting experiments... My conclusion, go for a white sun together with very clear reflections. The reflections amplify the white sun and vice versa. For me still a focus of study: lighting and reflections.
On that note, the nose of my boyfriend provided me with a true case study in drop shadows!
Finally, I decided to border the faces with strong black lines. This way I thought I could make them jump out of the canvas more. Indeed, they did, but so much so that it seemed as if the faces were just pasted on top of the background, resulting in a true comic style. Moreover, the borders blocked the sunlight which was meant to reflect on the faces!
In short, where is that 'CTRL-z' button?!?! Well, I guess no paint no gain.
